Providence VA Resources

The following is a list of transportation options for Veterans coming into the Providence VA Medical Center, Providence VA community clinics and other pre-authorized outside Providence VA medical referral visits.

Beneficiary Travel Reimbursement: @ 41.5 cents per mile, or public transportation fares. Reimbursed by direct deposit to bank account or “Direct Express Debit Card. Sign-up is available at Patient Travel or the Agent Cashier window at the medical center. You can submit a claim via kiosk, mail-in claim form or in person at the Beneficiary Travel window.
  • Veterans with disabilities rated 30% or more service-connected (SC): travel for care relating to any of the Veterans medical or mental health issues
  • Veterans with service connected disabilities rated at Zero to 30% seen for care relating specifically to their service connected issue(s)
  • Veterans receiving a VA Pension
  • Veterans with annual income below the maximum applicable annual rate of pension
    Current rate of pension is below $12,907.00 a year for Veteran with no dependents
    Rate goes up with each dependent claimed to a max of 4 dependents
  • Veterans traveling in relation to a Compensation and Pension (C&P) Examination

  • Veterans with service connected disabilities rated 30% or more
  • Veterans with disabilities rated less than 30% seen for care relating specifically to service connected condition(s)
  • Veterans receiving a VA Pension
  • Veterans with annual income below the maximum applicable annual rate of pension
    Current rate of pension is below $12,907.00 a year for Veteran with no dependents
    Rate goes up with each dependent claimed to a max of 4 dependents
  • Veterans traveling in relation to a Compensation and Pension (C&P) examinations *with a medical need for special mode of travel
  • Certain non-Veteran attendants, Caregivers and donors when related to care of a Veteran. Pre-approval is required.
  • For scheduled appointments only. Not available for med or equip pick-up, drop-in or walk-in visits.
    Limited “Veterans Transportation Network” (DAV van service) has resumed:
    • Veterans should call 401-457-3387 M-F, between 5:30 a.m. and 7 a.m. for reservations
    • Door-to-door service provided by volunteer drivers in donated DAV vehicles
    • Must be able to get into and out of a vehicle without assistance -- no wheelchairs/walkers
    • Service runs primarily for morning visits, with pick-ups arranged the day of visit
    • Must have scheduled VA appointment
    • Volume is limited due to a small number of drivers at this time
    • Only 1 Veteran picked up at a time
    • All Veterans will be dropped off at the Main Entrance for screening
    • All Veterans must wear masks when transported
    • Note that Veterans in Portsmouth, Middletown, Newport, Tiverton, Bristol and Little Compton must call 2 business days in advance
    • Middletown and Newport vets must meet the van at the Middletown VA Clinic
    • South County van minimum 2 business days in advance, one week preferably
    • Note that South County driver availability is not guaranteed. If available, South County driver will call the night before

    Some Providence VA Shuttle Services have been temporarily suspended. For more operational updates, visit https://www.providence.va.gov/emergency/index.asp:

    • Limited Hyannis VA Clinic shuttle service has resumed:

      • Limit of 5 passengers per day with designated seats marked.
      • Riders will be screened by the Hyannis Clinic before they board the shuttle.
      • Riders must wear face masks for the duration of the shuttle ride; there will be a supply of masks on the shuttle.
      • Departure from Hyannis is 7 a.m.; riders should arrive at the clinic at 6:45a.m.
      • To make a shuttle reservation, call 401-457-3387 between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m., Monday - Friday.

      Limited VA Boston shuttle service has also resumed:

      • Max of 3 Veterans Total with Social Distancing.
      • Veterans will meet at the basement waiting area near the barber shop, after being screened at the main entrance, report time 5:30 a.m.
      • Masks will be required for the duration of the shuttle ride.
      • Departure time from Providence is 5:45 a.m., Monday – Friday.
      • To make a shuttle reservation, call 401-457-3387 between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m., Monday - Friday.
    • Shuttle from Main Campus to VA Eagle Square Campus - Shuttle runs on a 20 min. schedule starting at 8 a.m. and ending at 4:20 p.m., Mon thru Fri.
      • Open to all ambulatory Veterans and visitors
      • Masks required
      • Social distancing limits available seating
