Providence VA Medical Center, Rhode Island
Integrative Health and Wellness Center
The Integrative Health and Wellness Center provides alternative therapies and other wellness services to enhance Veterans overall health and wellbeing.
Evidence shows that patients can benefit from taking care of both their minds and bodies, what is oftern referred to as "Mind-Body wellness." The goal is to help Veterans leverage body wellness to enhance mental health recovery, and leverage mental wellness to enhance physical recovery, depending on their needs. Services will initially include acupuncture, meditation, integrative health education, osteopathic manipulation, iRest Yoga Nidra, wellness massage, mindfulness, Qi gong/Tai Chi, Reiki and Yoga. Other servaces may be added in the future, as well.
As part of the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act of 2016, VA has been expanding complementary and integrative health programs that focus on delivering health care centered on the goals and needs of each individual Veteran. Instead of asking "what is the matter" with a Veteran patient, this Whole Health model focuses on "what matters" to the Veteran. While clinical care still plays a critical role, the Whole Health model also places emphasis on empowering Veterans to develop their own health goals, and equipping them with self-care skills and support.
Veterans will be able to access wellness center services and programs through self-referral or through their primary care providers. After an initial orientation, Veterans will then have access an array of services offered in the center.
Interested Veterans can contact the center at 401-273-7100 ext. 3082 for more information.
