Women Veterans Continue Making History

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – This Women's History Month, the VA Providence Healthcare System invites women Veterans to celebrate their achievements and continue making history with VA during the Women Veterans Celebration at the Providence VA Medical Center, 1 p.m. – 3 p.m. Thursday, March 12, in the 5th floor auditorium of the main hospital, 830 Chalkstone Ave., Providence, R.I.

"For the Department of Veterans Affairs, Women's History Month means more than just celebrating our women Veterans – it means making sure they're proud of the role we play in the remaining chapters of their story," said VA Chief of Staff Pam Powers.

Women comprise about 10 percent of the Veterans VA serves nationwide, a number expected to increase, as women make up about 20 percent of current military forces. VA facilities provide primary care for women, as well as gynecology, maternity, specialty care and mental health services. In the last fiscal year, 41 percent of all women Veterans were enrolled in VA health care.

Since VA started tracking outpatient satisfaction in 2017, women's trust in VA has increased. In 2019, for example, more than 83 percent of female Veterans trusted the care they received from VA, and initial data suggests the trust score for 2020 is on pace to reach nearly 85 percent.

"We expect the number of women Veterans enrolled with the VA Providence Healthcare System will continue to increase as our customer service and patient experience for women Veterans continue to improve," said Erin Clare Sears, acting director of the VA Providence HCS. "We offer a host of services geared toward women Veterans, including our Women Veterans Health Clinic, gynecological care, birth control, infertility evaluation and treatment, maternity care and mammograms through community providers, nutrition and weight management, and telehealth services."
