One VA! - Lending A Helping Hand
On Friday afternoon, the Providence VAMC received a call from the VISN 1 Emergency Management Coordinator to respond to an urgent request from VISN 3, New York. VISN 3 needed some generators, and fast. The VISN's Manhattan Campus had experienced flooding and has been without any source of electrical power. The Providence VAMC quickly assembled a team of engineering and contracting personnel to determine if any of its assets were available to support VISN 3. The team determined that a large electrical generating rental unit, which had supported Providence through a recent construction project, could be made ready for immediate transport to New York. The team worked with VISN 3, the rental company, and other VA staff to ensure immediate availability of this unit. The unit arrived in New York Friday afternoon.
The VA Manhattan Campus, part of VISN 3, was evacuated in anticipation of Hurricane Sandy to ensure the safety of patients. Over 100 patients were transferred out of the facility without incident, most of whom were escorted by a member of their care team or met later by a familiar face.
